I am going to be taking my comprehensive exam this coming Thursday and Friday. What this means is that I will be essentially unreachable until 5 PM on Friday.
Hopefully, this will go well and I won't have to take the exam again. That said, all I can think about is when I took the GRE. I did well my first go around, but didn't get the scores I wanted. I took it again and did much better only a few weeks later. My first set of scores didn't matter. What mattered is that I eventually got the scores that I had been wanting. If that set of events repeats itself on this exam, so be it (I just really hope that it doesn't).
I don't know exactly when I'll find out if I passed or not, but when I know (and have some time to celebrate or cry, whichever is most appropriate) you will know the following Sunday, at 2ish.
In case you have forgotten about what this exam entails, here is a quick rundown:
-I have spent the summer reading (and in some cases, trying to read) a lot of political theory books.
-On Thursday, I will get a choice between at least two possible prompts that will focus on the history of political thought. I will have eight hours to write a compelling argument of 2000-3500 words. The prompt will ask me to use a certain number of texts. Sometimes, though, the prompts restrict the texts that can be used to respond to the question.
-On Friday, I will get a choice between at least two possible prompts that will focus on more contemporary texts. Sometimes the questions are extremely specific and clearly require you to use certain texts. Other times, they are broad and allow you to use whatever texts one finds most suitable to his argument. I will have the same amount of time and the same length requirement.
Sounds easy, right?
And with that, it is back to work I go!
